Vittorio Caruso, 56, of Glen Cove died Monday, June 17, shortly after he reportedly drank something and became critically ill in Santo Domingo at the Boca Chica Resort.
A report produced by the Dominican Republic Attorney General's Office said Vittorio, who had lived in the Boca Chica community for several years, died of "respiratory failure due to acute heart failure."
According to the Attorney General's Office, Caruso died after telling his partner that he had "shortness of breath and chest pain."
The office went on to say that Caruso had "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease," there was no sign of physical violence or chemical toxicity" according to his autopsy report.
Family members, including his sister-in-law, Lisa Maria Caruso, said Caruso had been in good health.
Vittorio Caruso co-owned Vittorio’s in Glen Cove with one of his brothers before selling the pizzeria this spring.
Caruso is the 11th American tourist to die in the Dominican Republic this year.
The FBI has sent a team to the Dominican Republic to investigate the deaths.
